The Hero's Journey includes Separation, Initiation, and the Return Of the Hero; Phillip.Phillip is the main Character in "The Cay", and he does complete his Hero's Journey. Phillip Completes the journey, but he doesn't complete it in the regular way.In "The Cay" it doesn't state directly that he is making a bettter world for himself. In "The Cay" it is inferred that he completes his journey.

Phillip's Separation is when him and his mother leave Willemstad. The reason that Phillip had to leave was his mother thought their home wasn't safe.Phillip's Threshold is unclear because he was forced to leave but the threshold was when his father told him he had to leave. The Descent is when Phillip and his mother actually leave Willemstad and also when he is pulled onto the raft by Timothy. Phillip's Separation is very short and a bit rushed.

All of Phillip's Initiation takes place on the cay with Timothy. The Abyss is when phillip is on the raft, blind and it continues to when he land on the cay.Timothy is the large,black man that saved Phillip and he is Phillip's Mentor.Phillip's Transformation begins when Timothy slapped him. Phillip's Transformation is also when Timothy dies and Phillip has to care for himself.Most of "The Cay" is based around Phillip's Initiation.

Phillip's Return is when he is found on the cay by the men from the destroyer boat.Phillip's Creation takes place after he is found and he has the three operations.The Creation is also when he is searching maps for the cay with his new eyesight.Phillip is looking for the cay so he can visit Timothy's grave.It is stated that Phillip is looking for the cay but the book does not say that he does.

Phillip's Hero's Journey is completed because the book says that he will visit the cay. When Phillip visits the cay his world will be better because he will have closure on Timothy's death.Technically Phillip doesn't complete his Hero's Journey because he doesn't actually visit the cay.Phillip planned to visit the cay so his journey is still in the midst of being finished.Phillip did complete his journey but not fully.
